What happens when you try to safe boot it?
Or select the bootable system with alt (option) at startup?
If it hangs at start, where does it get stuck precisely?

Make sure the XP machine starts WINDOWS in stead of MAC OS.

Also XP might have a problem with HFS format, which might cause it to crash to.

Finally the drive has crashed so severly that it crashed the system when detected.

Try to find someone with a mac and check if he can access the drive. If not, most likely your drive is really gone.

Good luck, Kees

can i connect my Mac drive to a window computer and recover the data from there? i live in the middle of nowhere and the cloest person to me is about 110 miles out lol i got that program called mac drive 7 and will test it out to see if it works! please if anything else do let me know! thanks

I find uBuntu can kick drives out of these stupid little strops.
If not: I recently had a drive that wouldnt mount. Try it in a different sata cable. (like where the cd drive is)

Most of these other replies are good info and accurate.

In your case, I would hope to own an "expert system" CD, like Tech Tool Pro (or equivalent). If the drive is otherwise operational, Tech Tool Pro can recover and make operational a 'soft' error that causes boot failure (like in your case). And the CD/DVD can boot from the optical drive (meaning it can work even on a system that won't boot from the HD.

Good Luck!
