hi, I am trying to run a hardware text frm the PowerMac G4 Install and restore disc that came with my mac. I can't get the Hardware test to appear in the menu as it says it should do. so I can't run it! It says after putting in cd "to use apple hardware test, hold down option key as computer starts up and choose 'apple hardware test' from the menu." Holding the option key doesn't seem to make a difference and I can't see the test anywhere. Any suggestions? Can this be downloaded instead?

many thanks

Hi Sarah,

It can't be downloaded separately. The install disc 1 (or the one labeled Hardware Test) contains it. When booting with "alt" you can see all bootable options - if it's not listed, click on the arrow on the right to reload it. As long as it's for the same model that you have, it should work. Is it possible you could have other G4 install and restore discs around, maybe it could be for a different model?

thank you,

It worked! The test ran and tells me there are no hardware problems. my mac keeps freezing up a few minutes after start up,or just turning off itself, so i restart, it does it again, maybe several times then settles down to run ok for the day.. so i guess i need to do software checks now..!

thanks for your help.

Maybe it could be worth running extended test in loop for it, all evening or overnight.
When booted to hardware test, control+L key will get you to looped mode (and out of it). If suspecting something like RAM it is better to let the test run looped at least for hours.
