Having problems backing up Mac hard disk to DVD-R

I learned the importance of backing of data from my desktop to somewhere and I have been backing up by burning the updated data to my DVD-Rs. Occasionally, it didn't work with an error message, but most of the time it was successful.

I have not backed up for 2 months and thought I'd better. Once again, I have tried to back up about 10x with different disks of different batches and I get a variety of error messages early in the burning process. Mostly I was getting 2, but the last time I tried, I got one I've never seen before as follows:

1) Burning disk failed because communication to the disk drive failed (Error code # Ox80020026) or;

2) Operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurrd (Error Code Ox8002006D); and

3) The operation cannot be completed because one or more reqired items cannot be found (-43); could not open the date fork of "<unable to get file path>"

What can I do???

Save yourself the headache and get an external HD. Much more effecient and you burn enough disks you will basically pay for an external drive anyway. Better yet if you happen to be running 10.5 or better you can set up Time Machine for your backups and not have to worry about burning DVDs every time you back up.

Thanks. I might just do that! But I still am curious as to why it suddenly stopped backing up and all the error messages.
