hd continuously active

One of our iMacs has developed the habit of 'being continuously active' unless it's put to sleep.

The hd chatters away - seemingly reading/writing/plotting word domination - even when everything is quit.

Advice appreciated. Please and thanks.

If you are running Panther, go to /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor and see if you can get an idea of what task is causing all the disk I/O activity. Once you have determined that, then we can see what can be done to fix the condition.

Thanks.
Not running panther. Just Jag.

Norton showed bundle bit error with memory management - so fixed and then solved.

Re-occured today. iPulse shows navx active on memory swap... zero page ins and 260-450 faults.

I've no idea what this means.

You're using Norton? On Jaguar? Could be the culprit. Norton has a very nasty way of messing up OSX, one of the reasons it was discontinued. Do a search and you'll find plenty on it.
Have you run anything like cocktail or maintain lately? Maybe a simple maintenance job and repairing permissions will fix it. And avoid Norton unless you're on a OS 9 or earlier. platform.

It means Norton Anti-Virus is the likely culprit causing the disk I/O activity. Try deactivating NAV and see if the problem doesn't go away. If not, try uninstalling Norton utilities, you will have to use their uninstall routine and then go to the Symnatec web site to find out how to remove the files the uninstaller leaves behind.
