HDD makes scratching noise but comp works fine

About 48 hours ago the HDD on my MacBook Pro started making a noise that sounds like a cross between nails on a chalk board and static electricity. I called and talked with Mac support and they suggested I re-set the main chip. I did that and it seemed to have worked - for a few hours. Then the noise returned. I've shut down, re-started, sent into sleep mode, etc. Everything is fine. It's just the horrible noise coming from the HDD. Is this just one long, drawn out HDD death? Or is it possible something else is wrong? I ran diagnostics and checked the S.M.A.R.T. status and came back with clean health on everything - including the HDD. Thanks, I appreciate the help!
