I can't help it - I am all geeked up about 10.2 and improved graphics performance. All this has had me going wild in taking imaginary shopping trips in my mind and I am thinking of doing the following:
1. New video cards. It seems that if I want to take advantage of Quartz Extreme, I have to dump my Rage 128 Orion - problem is I have two - one AGP and one PCI for two monitors. Since my G4 450 is a 2x AGP, it seems I am a little limited in my card selection. Anyone have advice on 2 cards I could get (AGP and PCI for dual monitors) that would both take advantage of Quartz Extreme? I am not into 3D modeling or games, but I want to treat myself on this - I want awesome and responsive video/graphics, but within budgetary reason. ATI or NVIDIA? Which NVIDIA(s)?
2. Processor upgrade. Thanks to a macosx member, I know that PowerLogix is coming out with processor upgrades I can use for my G4 - 450. 750 to 1GB. I know I want 1 GB and it looks like it is going to be about $700. Does anyone know about any limitations of these processor upgrades? I notice a lot of G3 - G4 upgrades aren't supported by 10.2 and I don't want to be in that position for 10.4, 10.5 or whatever.
So here is my dilema. If I spend $500 for video cards and $700 for a processor I will end up with a pretty darn fast Mac that should keep me happy for another two years at least. I already have 1 GB of RAM, and although RAM is somewhat cheap, I don't think these chips will work on newer G4s. So, to get the same thing in a new Mac I guess I would have to spend about $2300 for a 933 plus $200 for an extra video card and $300 for RAM. That's a big difference. If I know a processor upgrade will keep me kosher with OS X for a few years, I will be happy. I called POwerLogix and we have been playing phone tag, but if anyone has any advice or opinions on video cards and/or processor upgrades, I would really appreciate your opinion.
