Hey, I have iPhoto version 7.1 and I am having problems emtying the trash on it. The trash currently contains about 12,000 images and 200 or so videos and whenever I try to open it, iPhoto freezes up. (It says "Not responding" in the force quit menu) Is there a way to emtpy the trash without using iPhoto? Please help, I am running out of hard drive space!

Thanks,
Sam

The sheer amount of files in the iPhoto Trash would cause the "Not Responding" message.

I can't believe you have that amount in the Trash .....

Firstly, the "Not Responding" message doesn't necessarily mean that the Trash in iPhoto isn't going to ever be emptied. It's just the immense amount of files that need to be dealt with that sends iPhoto into the not responding mode but in the background the app is just trying to get a grip on the task and if you left your Mac and returned later you *may* find the Trash has been emptied and all is in order. Having said that I don't know that for a fact and your Mac would need to not be set to sleep. Maybe the enormity of the task would win out in the end, it's hard to say.

I think now is a good time to back up your iPhoto Library.

You might need to drag the files out of the Trash, back to the Library, then add them back to the Trash at manageable amounts before being able to empty the Trash successfully. You could try 1,000 at a time.
