HELP - Error - domain / had no root account.

I just logged in as root to replace a file in the system/library/extensions folder, then logged back out. Now I get the following error window:

Error

Domain / has no root account. You must log in on the computer named localhost/local (where the master islocated) to make changes.

<ok>

Anyone have a clue? Going into NetInfo Mangager indeed does show no root account in the users folder.

What in the world can I do?????

I assume I will have problems when it's time to install updates? akkk.....

Not sure exactly how you "lost" your root account, but you don't really need one, you know. Use the "sudo" command in your Terminal, and you can do anything root can do.
I've never had to use root or sudo to install updates, BTW.
And the next time you're in NetInfo, go to Domains>Security, and see if it will allow you to reactivate the root account.

No, you don't need to have the root account enabled, but I thought it was still *there* (I thought it had to be...)

At any rate, that's not quite what this sounds like. It sounds like the computer is looking for a computer for the NetInfo root domain (something like the Primary Domain Controller in Windows NT networking, I think).
Somehow, you might have changed the machine that controls the root of the NetInfo domain from the localhost to something else... maybe off by a space or a single character. I'm totally guessing here, but it might be worth looking at.

Sorry, I can't think off the top of me head where to get to that in the NetInfo utility, but I can do a little research if you want me to.

The NetInfo Manager is located in the applications/utilities folder.

Listed in the window for users is my login, unknown, daemon, and www.

I don't have a clue what those others might be.....

Anyway, there is no user "root", so I'm not certain where it went to, as there use to be a user "root", as I had to log in as root to do the install.

Go figure. I am primarily worried that this will screw up some system updates or installs.....or if I need to do another "hands on" type install.
