In the last few weeks my power Mac g4 has started playing up. Applications will unexpectedly quit especially Word. It has started regularly crashing asking me to restart by holding down power button or asking for a remote debugger and now my mouse pointer has started doing random things like jumping to corners or going everywhere except where I want it to. I haven't added any new hardware. What is going on?

"'Help!! have i got spyware on my G4'?", it is quite doubtful that you do.

'In the last few weeks ... Applications will unexpectedly quit especially Word ... asking me to restart ... or asking for a remote debugger and now my mouse pointer has started doing random things ... I haven't added any new hardware. What is going on?'

Unknown information:
Explicit Mac model - 'Sales Order Number' from 'System Profiler's ('/Applications/Utilities/' folder), 'Hardware's 'Hardware Overview' list.
Explicit System / MacOS X version - for example, 9.2.2, 10.1.5, 10.4.3.
Word version.
'... mouse pointer has started doing random things', is not non descriptive. Be descriptive.
What software was installed and / or deleted 'in the last few weeks'?
What attempts, by or for you, were made to resolve the listed problems?

Did you open (run, launch) 'Disk First Aid' / 'Disk Utility' from the (unknown version System / MacOS X) installation disc and attempt to repair the (unknown model) Mac?
If MacOS X is installed, did you open (run, launch) 'Disk Utility' and click on the 'Repair Disk Permissions' button? (this process should be repeated at least once; after clicking the 'Repair Disk' button [a process that should also be repeated, at least once]).

Yeah sorry about lack of data. i have a 1.25 GHz powerPC G4 with 512 MB SDRAM running mac osx 10.3.9. In the last few weeks it has started playing up. Applications will unexpectedly quit especially Word (when i scroll through a document). It has started regularly crashing asking me to restart by holding down power button or asking for a remote debugger and now my mouse pointer has started doing random things like jumping to corners or going everywhere except where I want it to. I haven't added any new hardware and i am running up to date Norton antivirus which has not picked up anything. i have run Disk utility and clicked on repair disk permissions a few times didn't seem to stop the problem though.

Three troubleshooting steps to try:
  1. Create a new user account with administrative privileges, logon to that account. If the problems do not persist then your problem is limited to something in your home folder, it could be anything from a third party app to corrupted preference files.
  2. Deactivate and preferably uninstall Norton Anti-Virus, at least temporarily. NAV has been implicated in a number of apparently unrelated problems including kernel panics.
  3. If you have the Apple hardware test CD for your Mac or TechTool Pro 4.0.6, run the hardware tests repeatedly -- at least four or five complete test cycles to see if there are underlying hardware problems.
