My kitten has a habit of laying on my keyboard and has somehow reassigned my volume buttons to control expose. how can I get to where those buttons can be reset to operate the volume controls?

This is on a 24" imac running 10.5.8

Could you be more specific? I'm looking at the keyboard shortcuts and i don't see a listing for volume control. it looks like I can turn off the F11 and F12 function that it is set on, but will that make it default to volume control?

Among closer examination, the volume controls are operating whatF3 ad F4 normally did.

I think I should just stop messing with this and tell my partner to just live with not having the volume control buttons. I have now done something to my computer in trying to figure this out, noe my volume up button operates Dashboard and the volume down button just makes the thunk sound of a non-fnctioning key and my dashboard button no longer works either.

There might be a firmware upgrade available for keyboard issues. Had a 20" in a week or two ago where a firmware upgrade corrected an unexplained keyboard issue.

oddly.. after fooling around with the keyboard pane, DESELECTING the option to use all function keys as standard function keys seems to have solved the problem on both computers!

Exactly. I thought it was more clear regarding hardware functions, but that must have been in a previous version of Mac OS X. The F-keys otherwise associated with volume control are the default keys for Exposé when using them as standard function keys.
