Help Me Share a Serial Printer

Dave N

My OS X Goes to XI
I have an older PowerPC Mac 6500/275 running OS 9.1 and want to share out an HP LaserJet 2100M printer that's connected to it.

I hooked up the LaserJet via the serial printer port. I set Appletalk CP set to "Printer Port" and was able to see the LaserJet in the chooser and set it up for local printing. But when I switch Appletalk to "Ethernet" to access the network I cannot print, or even see the LaserWriter in the Chooser.

Any help appreciated.

You have confussed the computer and printer. Does the LaserJet have an ethernet port? This will determine what equipment you need to keep the printer working while you access the network.

If it does have an ethernet port, then all you need is an ehternet 5 port hub. Connect your computer to port 1, the printer to port 2 and the network to 5. You will need CAT 5 ethernet cables. One for your computer and one for the printer. Lynksys makes very good hubs.

If there is no ethernet port on the printer, then you need to get an Assante or Farrallon ehternet adaptor. using the local talk adaptor connect the printer to the ethernet adaptor. Using a CAT 5 from your computer to the ethernet adaptor and the network cable to the ethernet adaptor.
