Help! My fonts are semi-missing (?)

Not being a heavy fonts user, I never noticed this until I tried to add a pair of fonts...

It appears that the only fonts that show up in my menus/text panels are the ones in the System/Library/Fonts folder. Nothing from Library/Fonts, and nothing from ~me/Library/Fonts. There are font files in those locations, but nothing with any of those names shows up anywhere.

Any suggestions? I'm not even sure where to start tracking this down. This is a bit too bizarre for my tastes.

fonts here System/Library/Fonts should be seen by everyone.

fonts here me/Library/Fonts are just for the user me

Now remember to restart you program for the fonts to take effect.

Does that help any?

Also make sure your fonts are recognized by OS X. Do they have an A icon?
