I am copying a file from my B&W G3 to my G4 iMac, through a swicth. It should be like a breeze at 100 MB/s, but it stays as slow as a stupid dial-up connection. (see figure)

What IPs do the computers have? Are they on the same subnet? If they're not (can happen with ADSL and cable providers), all the data is routed through your ISPs net and thus slow(er). You might want to create a second 'location' that uses internal IP numbering to make sure that packets aren't routed through your ISP.

does it work on normal speed on target mode? if you have a big amount of files, maybe it'll be worth trying on that mode too. .. which cable are you using?

Thanks you all for your help... I solved it.

1) I disconnected the modem, and forced IPs... transfers were 2 minutes for 600 MB.
2) I reconnected the modem, and put the IPs back to DHCP... the transfer is still fast !!!

Conclusion: Fryke was correct: all my transfer went through the ISP provider ! (even if the two machines were on the same subnet: Rendez-Vous was operating ok). Now the machines have the same IPs as at the beginning, but the Mac to Mac transfer is fast.

Apparently the switch did not see that we could be direct.
