Help needed with linksys WAP & router

Hey everyone, I've been reading some forums about the best WAP to purchace since apple's Airport is so damn expencive, and I decided to go with a Linksys. Now currently there are only 2 computers in the house (a G4 cube, and a toshiba portage something or other) so, I got an airport card for my cube, and a linksys card for my brothers, and hooked everything up. Since I am much more farmiliar with the cube, I went to work on that first. I pluged in the card, and the setup utility automatically launched. I was getting a full signal, but I couldn't access the internet. As an experament, I unpluged the Linksys from the dsl line, and I was still getting a full signal. From this, I decided that the WAP/Router was not communicating information to and from my DSL modem. Any thoughts as to how I could tell the WAP/router my Domain Name Servers, account name/password, etc. would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance
 
I recently bought a Linksys BEFSR41 router and set it up on my G4. You should be able to access the router from your Cube if you can get that link going (I'm totally unfamilar with wireless stuff). My IP address I typed in was 192.168.1.1. I think this is standard for a lot of routers out there, but I could be wrong. My setup was pretty much plug and play.

If you can test that you have an internet connection via your DSL modem, and you can make sure your router works, it should work right away.

One thing you could try is directly hooking up your Cube to the DSL modem with the cross-over cable. If you get internet from there...
Hook up your router to your DSL modem (with standard Ethernet cable) and with another standard ethernet cable, hook your Cube up to the router. You should see some lights on the router indicating your Cube's network card is up, and you should get internet. If that works, then try wireless.
 
I tried that and it didn't work. Let me give you some more figures. I am using DSL, so my network is configued over PPPoE. IP address, Subnet Mask, and Router numbers are all configured automatically. From the TCP/IP tab, the only options I have are Domain Name Server (which I have), and Search Domain. In the PPPoE tab, I have Account Name, Password, etc, but I dont think that has anything to do with this problem.

I seem to remember my Linksys help fold-out thingy forbid the use of PPPoE for some reason. You might have to doublecheck your own instructions. I used DHCP, and it worked right away.

I don't understand what your problem is exactly, but I hope this helps.
 
I tried DCHP, but the thing is, I couldn't find any place to input my Account name and password. Where did you input yours?
 
Actually, I don't have an account name / password to get on the internet. I have Earthlink Cable through Time Warner, and I have an account name / password, but that's just to access Earthlink's email and stuff.

But, there WAS a place to enter in account information via your web browser and that IP address I mentioned earlier.

I am not at home right now, but when I get home and have a chance, I will see what I can find and post back.
 
allright, I'll be checking the posts when you do get home. The thing is, I have Earthlink DSL, so I have a screen name and password. I think I remember something about entering information via a web browser, but it was instructions for PC, and I had no idea how I could make it work on a mac. If anyone knows, just walk me through it from the beginning. I think I'm going to delete all my settings and start all over again.
 
OK, I believe all you have to do is physically connect your router to your DSL modem, and your computer to your router, both with regular ethernet cables. Set your computer to DHCP. Basically with DHCP (Dynamic Host something Protocol), when you attempt to connect, the router hands out IP addresses for all computers to connect. That's the difference between a router and hub - a hub is less smart.

Anyway, if all your hardware is plugged in and you have DHCP setup, and your router does not have any weird settings going on (you'd know better than I would), you should be able to simply type in any web browser on your computer this IP address, which is your router address:
192.168.1.1

From there, you should get an authorization dialog box asking you for a user name and password. The little instruction sheet I had said leave the user name blank and type in "admin" in lowercase for the password. This got me to a Linksys web page which probably resides somewhere right on the router. I see a Host name field and a Domain name field that you might be interested in. They are blank for me. I do not see a user name / password anywhere that might help you in connecting your DSL modem, but I am less familiar with that.

Okay, I have a wierd situation which turns into a two part question.

I have DSL at home and 5 IPs. YES, 5 IPs. I run a webserver and two laptops from an 8 port switch. I purchased the Linksys DSL Wireless 4 port router/firewall. It was no problem to set it up with 1 IP and let it use DHCP to hand out to my home network, but there are two problems...

Problem 1:

I would like to setup the router to handle 5 IPs and handle requests for all 5, but that does not seem feasible, anyone know?

Problem 2:

My G4 laptop has no problems with DHCP and a steady connection, but the whole wireless thing is not working.

I can go on the router and see that my laptop is connected (both as wireless and cat5) but the laptop cannot see the internet. Any suggestions?
