Help!! - No sound; output devices not detected

When I turned on my macbook, the sound icon was gone from my menu bar and when i try to increase or decrease the sound using my keyboard, it just shows a crossed circle symbol, as though it's muted.

I've checked system preferences and it says no output devices detected. Shouldn't it detect my speakers, at the least?

Tried poking a bobby pin in the headphone jack - no use.

What's going on?
