Help on battery for Powerbook G4

I just got my new Powerbook G4 667 on Saturday and have had it plug into the AC since then.
I tried to use it on battery power today but it didnt power up. Is there somehow I can find out if it's charging and if the battery even works?
Keep in mind. I havent used a Mac for a good 10 years, so this is new territory to me.
Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried pushing the silver button on the battery to see if any of the four LED's light up? Also, when you have the AC adapter plugged in, does the lightning bolt come on in the icon of the battery in the taskbar as well?
