Help required with OS X Alias problems

Hi,

I am having a really bad day, I have 2 mac's a G4 tower (10.3) and a G5 IMac (OS 10.4), they both have the same problem connecting to servers.

The error message I get is that the Alias file is damaged, although if I manually put the IP address in (afp://192.168.0.X) it sometimes works.

I would really appreciate any advice you could give.

I don't know what an alias file is other then something sendmail uses.

Usually if you have to get somewhere with an explicate IP it's a dns issue.

What are the name servers for your mac's and what name server is the server your connecting to use ?

Does dig, host or nslookup work for forward and reverse names ?
