Help with desktop/missing icon

My partner was playing around with her Macbook and it froze.

She turned it off and then when she turned it back on the "My Mac" icon on her desktop was gone.
It's still there when we look for it in Finder, but so far we haven't been able to drop/drag/move the "MyMac" icon back on to the desktop.

I'm sure that there's a perfectly simple explanation for this, but if anyone could give me some advice it would be much appreciated.

There's no "My Mac" icon. You probably mean the "Macintosh HD", i.e. the harddrive icon. (You could've renamed that to "My Mac", of course.) The Finder has preferences in the "Finder" menu. One of those lets you show or not show harddrives on the Desktop. Just take a look.
