Hi let me start by stating that i have DirectTv, I was wondering if i bought a replay tv or a tivo can i just hook it up and use it or do i have to subscribe to another service and pay more.

PS i cant hook a phoneline to it.

I have a ReplayTV unit, and you have to subscribe to their service to get the channel listings and such. You can pay a one time fee or a monthly fee. I don't know of anyother way around, but then I never looked.

It requires an internet connection of some sort, because it needs to download the tv listings and updates for the machine. I just plugged it into my wireless router with an ethernet [Cat5] cable and away it went.

I really like the ReplayTV, compared to my cable providers DVR unit, as it has commercial skipping and repeat recording. It's easier to search and just more intuitive in its interface.

Hope I've helped!

I have the DirecTV tivo unit and I like it, but you do have to hook a phone line to it.

Yes you will have to pay a monthly fee.

1) TiVo can be used with a cable or satellite box.
2) Newer TiVo's come with "TiVo Basic" which allows very simple, VCR-like operation. If you want the more advanced features (and you will) you must subscribe to the TiVo service. You can buy it monthly, or pay a 1-time fee for the life of the unit.
3) TiVo "Series 2" players can use a WiFi network instead of a phone line, if you get an approved USB 802.11b adapter to connect to it. I use this - it works great. Setup was almost effortless. ::love::
