I received a iMac G3 OS X 10.2.8 desk top computer as a gift.
I have never used, or played with one. I know absolutly nothing.
I have tried to download MSN Messenger, and YAHOO! IM, and AIM. None of them install, and it does not tell me why.
I cannot download Adobe Reader either for the "cheat sheet".
I do not know, if something was deleted, before it was given to me, by my brother-in-law...I just know, that I can not download the programs, or use them. Are they not compatible with this version? I have googles, and have tried to download them as per each download site from MSN, YAHOO!, and AOL...nothing works. I love the computer, but-without commponents I am unaware of, I cannot make it work correctly.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
-Dean

It may be that those components only work for higher OS Xs like 10.4+.

So . . . what you can do is confirm that.

You need to post your full system specs:

I am assuming you have a PowerMac4,1 iMac (Early 2001) which, according to MacTracker can take up to 10.4.11 and 1 GB of memory. You will need to confirm your specs: post them.

G3 is a slow processor in comparison. However, free is free. I had a G3--Widdle Pismo--that ran 10.3 just fine. I upgraded it to a G4 which ran 10.4 pretty nicely--I ran the machine into the ground literally. So I am not sure if 10.4 will be happy on a G3. You WILL want to maximize your memory. I usually send people HERE, because they have treated me well a few times, but there are other vendors.

You will then need a 10.3 or 10.4 Installation Disk. Good News is they are cheap now since 10.5 and 10.6 are out. The Bad News is you have to try Amazon or Ebay or a vendor like that. The "Bad News" is some [CENSORED--Ed.] will try to sell you a pirated version or a disk that is specific to a particular machine--like me selling you my Pismo disks.

They will not work on your computer. You will weep. Gnash your teeth. Start listening to U2.

So make sure you get a Retail disk. Search this site for some pictures of the disks.

Good luck!

Oh yeah, the Posner "Missing Manual" series are GREAT for introducing you to Mac. The ones for 10.3 and 10.4 are CHEAP on Amazon and other used vendors.

Welcome to Mac!

. . . two drink minimum.
