Hot Charger Switched Itself Off

I was charging my iBook G4 when the charger switched itself off, I only noticed because my screen dimmed as it switched to battery. I had a look at the charger and the bulky bit in the middle ( I hope you know what I mean!) was red hot, almost too hot to touch. I let it cool down and plugged it back in and so far it seems to be working fine. However the bulky bit is warming up again.

Is this behaviour normal? Should I unplug it and get it checked?

I would say this definitely does not sound normal. I would definitely have it checked out. Do you have it plugged directly to the wall or are you using an extension cord? Either way, I would say this adapter has an issue.
