Hotmail Now "Windows Live": Anyone Else Having Problems w/Adium on Hotmail Account?

Amie

Mac Convert for Life
This sucks. Apparently, Hotmail is now called "Windows Live." Ugh. And, although I can still sign in to check my e-mail with my same user name and password, the site is now a LOT slower, and now Adium won't connect with my Hotmail account on chat. Anyone else having this problem?

I'm not having any problems with it so far, either on Adium or Pidgin. And yes, the Windows Live Hotmail is much slower because of all the "web 2.0" AJAX/Javascript/godknowswhatelse that's being used. I want my web 0.9 back! :p

No, it is called Windows Live Hotmail.

Well, yah. Like I said, it's still Hotmail (same account), but now it's called "Windows Live." I didn't think it was necessary to add the "Hotmail" part (I thought that part was obvious--guess not! LOL).

OK, Adium seems to be connecting with my Hotmail (oops, excuse me, "Windows Live Hotmail, ooooh fancy!) account now. I guess it took a while before they ironed out all the kinks. Whether the kinks were on Hotmail's part or Adium's part, I do not know. But it's working now.

A lot of people come to this forum and give incomplete or incorrect information while asking for help. Many products and services have names which differ in only subtle ways. If you give the exact and complete name, you will cause less confusion.

In some cases, yes. In other cases, no. Like this one. I don't think there's anything that could really be confused with "Windows Live," especially when I specifically and bluntly referred to "Hotmail" in both the subject heading and my original post.

At any rate, sorry if I confused you. I'll do my best not to bamboozle you again. ;)

This blows. I log into Hotmail and try to compose a new message and notice that all the names are missing from my contacts list! The only thing that shows now are the e-mail address, no names! I don't know my contacts by their e-mail addresses (that's the whole purpose of saving contacts), I know them by their first names (or "quick" names). How the heck do I get the names back in my contact list???

I hate to support stereotypes, but again, Microsoft has totally mucked up their "new and improved" Hotmail.

I know what you mean. I remember how great Hotmail used to be BEFORE Microsoft bought it out in the mid 90s. Before the buyout (and even for a while thereafter), Hotmail was hosted on FreeBSD and Sun Solaris servers and it worked great. Then Microsoft eventually switched Hotmail over to Windows servers. Then everything went downhill from there. :(

I know it's not a solution, but I second the Gmail stance. I've had a problem with neither Google's IM service nor their mail service.

My .mac login, already registered with windows live, is no longer allowed. I'm sent to a page where I'm asked to change my login id. I decided to use my gmail email. Put in details, click save and it errors with:

Your secret answer must be at least 5 characters long. Please type a new answer.

There is NO secret answer input field!!! This is very annoying as all my work contacts are on msn and I have no way of logging in at present, or changing my id.

i really like Windows Live Hotmail. a long overdue upgrade (GMail and Yahoo mail have had similar systems for a while now. makes old hotmail feel very clunky.

and you adium problems shouldn't be connected i don't think. Live Hotmail is just an upgrade to the interface for your email. your account is seperate.

Since you like it so much, can you answer my question (see above) and tell me how to get the damn names back in the contact list??? :D

Download all the contacts from hotmail or where ever you had them, then add them to your new account in Adium.

But how would that solve the problem? It's not Adium that has the problem with my contacts showing; it's Hotmail.
