How can I access my Canon ip4200 from my mac?

Hi there

I have a Canon ip4200 printer attached to my XP box. Sharing is enabled for this printer, and I can print to it from other windows machines.

Once I open the Printer Browser, and click on More Printers... and then browse tot he XP box that has the printer I want to use, I can see it listed. But the driver is not listed in the Printer Model dropdown. So I installed the Mac driver from canon, and tried again...but the printer is still not listed in the dropdown.

Is there something else I need to do to make this work?

First thing I do is install and then print from plain old direct USB, before taking my powerbooks wireless.

This question has been asked and answered on this forum too many times to count. You cannot use a USB print driver to print to a networked printer. Search this forum for CUPS and Gutenprint.

The only CUPS driver that works for that Canon is from www.printfab.net -- and it costs ~$60. Sorry.

You could always ask Canon why they refuse to provide "modern" drivers (that's what Apple calls CUPS drivers). The drivers provided by Canon use Carbon - an OS 9 legacy technology.

MisterMe, perhaps there should be an FAQ for this topic, or at least some guidance on what search terms to search for. neither "cups" nor "Gutenprint" -- whatever they are -- are obvious to new mac users.

gsahli, thanks for the info, I'll check it out.

gendem,

Users are expected to search the forum prior to asking questions. However, I am surprised at how many veteran users ask this how to print to their USB printers over the network. This question comes up several times a week. People are clearly not reading the help that their fellow forum users receive. One has to wonder what they are doing when not arguing whether Firefox or Safari is the better browser.

A FAQ is a good idea. However, people have to actually read the FAQs.
