How can I get the router to work?

I have a Linksys router 10/100 4-Port switch and a DSL modem. I put the DSL connection into the WAN and connected my iBook G4 800MHz to the router. But when I try to use the internet it won't work?

did you setup the WAN connection using the webinterface of the router? You can check if your WAN connection is established.

All I did was plug it all in and assume that I would not have to touch my Network prefs in panther because it was already set to built in ethernet.

Open the Router setup page

Links setup page (through your browser) is usually - 192.168.1.1

Click on the Enable option in the PPPoE section of the setup screen.
Enter the User Name you use to log on to your Internet Connection.
Enter your password.

I have it all set up, but the network prefs in panther won't find an IP address and just assigns itself one so the internet won't load?

Check with your ISP to determine if you have Dynamic hosting IP Address or Static. If it's dynamic you just need to set your built in ethernet for that (DHCP). If it's static you need to get the IP addresses from your ISP and then you are set. I don't think you can just plug and play with any ethernet network, unless you are working wirelessly with an airport card (as I am right now).

Your computer can automatically pick up the strongest airport/wireless signal but not so with ethernet. You have to instruct the computer how to access your ISP.

Hope this helps! :)
