How do I know what to delete with MOVIES to free up space?

I have files in iMovie that still live in the Project folder on launch that I'm done with. I have .proj files on the computer I'm not sure I need ( I believe this is iDVD?)

How do I identify what I can remove to free up space and what I need for projects still in the works?

There are DV movie clips that were used in creating the imovies and there are completed movies from thos dv movie clips that are mpeg4s. If these movies are completed, I assume I can delete the dv movie clips that were used in making the mpeg 4, correct?

Same goes for any quick time movie? If the .mov is done, anything that is still sitting around can be removed?

However, and this is the big however, if I delete the dv movie clips and ever decide to go back and make another Mpeg4, I cannot import from the mpeg 4 to make it into an edible movie, correct?

Same with iDVD. If I haven't completed the DVD but want to save what I'm working on to import later, what can I delete (or back up)?
