How do I share a folder?

Yep. Someone who has been using OSX for about a year is asking the most basic of all questions.

But I'm completely stumped.

We have a LAN in our house and have been sharing files fine via our public folders. However, we realized that we have no idea how to share any other folder on our LAN ala OS9. Is there an easy way to do this in OSX or is this not how OSX is supposed to work?

Download SharePoints from VersioTracker - that will sort you out. I use a fileserver at home, and until this weekend it ran OS9. However I bumped up the memory and installed Jag and then found it really difficult to share folders. I am sure that there is a way, but it wasn't obvious.

Anyway, Sharepoints will do everything that you need. If you make sure that Appletalk is working then it seems to work better as well. It will work without that, but I needed to get something working in about 5 minutes.

[Edit] Just noticed, you will need Jag.

Under 10.1 nothing seemed to work right, but under 10.2 it's easier. You just turn on Personal File Sharing in the Sharing prefs panel and you're underway. If you log in as an Admin you can do whatever you want. If you're a normal user, you can only access your home folder and other public folders.

Is it just me, or is this a severe problem in terms of Apple's continued insistance that Macs are still easy to use? I love OSX, but I really don't see how apple can still call it an easy-to-use OS. I actually installed an XP machine the other day and was quite surprised as to how easy XP is for a newbie.

Thanks for all of the replies!

Does this mean that you can't share individual folders?

I know Aapple want's to sell their server version, but come on this was dead easy in OS-9 and older.
