Is there any way to turn off the shadows and fancy effects in OS X? In windows XP, all of that can be turned off for greater performance and I was wonderng if the same was true for OS X?

there is an app called shadowkiller to turn off shadows, and you can turn of dock bouncing in the dock prefs, what else did you want to do?

Anything to speed up the performance. In Windows, you can make it such that the contents of a window are not visible while dragging. Is there such an option in OS X? Any other speed tips will be nice.

download tinkertool and shadow killer (there might not be a space)
from versiontracker.
and xoptimize

Also, I can turn off the genie effect, but the windows still "Shrink and expand" when I minimize and maximize them. Can I turn this off somehow?

Man, I should have asked this question a long time ago. This stuff speeds up OS X on my iMac (333 purple) like 100x. Very, very kool.

Is there any way to get "No effect" from the Dock, so windows just appear and disappear?

I don't think so, the colsest thing to that is to use the "scale" effect, which is faster than suck and genie.
also in tinkertool, uncheck "use rectangle effect" if it is checked.

I just found out that it does exactly what it says. It turns off the desktop so there are no icons or background image. I don't think that I want to go that far...
