How is Market Share Calculated

Is it based on new computer sales? Installed base? I just wondered because I know alot of people still using really old Macs. Is does the job for them whatever it is they are doing and I do not think that gets calculated in the Market Share. I am sure it based only on new computers because people using older Macs would not be buying new peripherals or software.

Interesting point. Market share is calculated on sales. However, the total number of Macs in use might well be much higher than the market share, as people are more likely to hold on to macs and continue using them for a longer time.
