How much ram can the 12" PB take?

This has been eating me lately. The 12" PowerBook, how much RAM can it handle?
If I go to AppleStore and max it out, it has 640MB RAM divided over 2 slots...that's one 128MB chip and one 512MB chip, as far as I know...is it possible to upgrade to 1GB of RAM, or does it have a limitation here? If so, why?

It has a 256 chip soldered in, and only the other slot is upgradeable, to the best of my knowledge. You can use upwards of 640, but you have to be willing to put out for a 1GB stick...which is currently hovering inthe $800 range.

If it has a 256MB chip built-in, adding 512MB would make it 768MB, right?
To get the 640MB Apple offers with a 256MB stick, you'll need a 384MB chip.
Do they make 384MB chips?
Or have they permanently stuck a 128MB chip in there? In that case, why on earth would they do that?

It comes with 256MB stock, one 128 soldered and another 128Mb chip. If you order it with 384Mb, they add a 256Mb chip to the 128Mb. If you order 640Mb, they add a 512Mb chip to the 128mb.

Is the 128mb chip really soldered in? Or do you just have to dissect the system to get to it?

I'd really be interested to know if someone is able to replace the stock 128 for a 512 (to have 1Gig of RAM) since it looks like I'll be buying a 12"PB myself sooner or later.

12"pb comes with 128mb soldered and 128mb replaceable. At least mine did.

THe max you can go to at the moment is 640 - with the 512mb add-in. That's what I did, and it's well worth it.

Replacing the 128mb was the best thing I ever did since buying a mac :) - anyone want to buy a completely useless 128mb SODIMM?
