How to Format in MAC

am new to mac i shifted recently to mac...
i just wanna know how to format an external hard disk in MAC

i read the manual but its all talking about setting it up
 
Booted into Mac OS X, connect the harddrive. If no dialogue whatsoever comes up, run "Disk Utility" (/Applications/Utilities/), there you should see the drive in the left pane. Select it and then set it up. Partition it, format it, whatever you like. It's pretty straightforward, no strings attached other than that you're going to lose all the files on the drive when you format it.
