How to install 10.1 on new iBook (Nov 2002)

Hi all,

I' want to install 10.1 on my new iBook on a different partition to test a few things.

Now I have an original Apple 10.1 install CD, but
the iBook can't finish the boot process...

It hangs during boot with a non spinning beachball in the upper left corner.
When hitting "return" it reboots.

Now my question: is it possible, that the Nov 2002 iBooks are not able to boot into 10.1 or is my CD just damaged ?

is it maybe possible to install the OSinstall.mpkg from the CD out of 10.2 ?

Thanks for any help

Actually, I bought my iBook on November 1st 2002 and I know for a fact that 10.1 will install on it. You can try installing in either of two ways: 1) with the Mac OS X CD directly, 2) with the System Recovery option.

Personally, I prefer 1) because it's faster and doesn't have the strange delays I often get with the system recovery. I would suggest the same thing for you. The only disadvantage is that installing Classic afterwards will be a pain (at least for me) and you won't get World Book installed.

You should be able to boot from the CD. Are you holding down "C" while you power it on? Have you checked that the CD itself is okay? Do you have the system recovery CDs, and do they boot?

err...

ok,
of course i got the recovery cds with my iBook, but like I stated it's a November 2002 iBook (800Mhz) which means the cd's are 10.2.3.

I want to install MacOS 10.1 for some testing purposes.
I have an original Apple OS 10.1 CD, but it won't boot...
Smiley mac hangs at some time.

Now I just want to know if it is possible to boot the newest version of the iBooks into 10.1 or if apple changed something in the hardware besides the faster cpu and the new graphics card, that might prevent it from booting 10.1.

ok, update:

I intstalled 10.1.5 from a g4 tower on my external firewire disk and tried to boot into that system with the iBook.

In verbose mode i checked what happened and everything was ok but it stopped at "Startup complete" than nothing happened, no login window, no finder, no aqua....

I booted back into my 10.2.3 partition and checked the console log and the last entry was:
"Feb 18 13:36:51 localhost loginwindow[242]: kCGErrorIllegalArgument : CGSUnregisterWindowWithSystemStatusBar: Invalid window

Feb 18 13:36:51 localhost halt: halted by myUserName

Feb 18 13:36:51 localhost syslogd: exiting on signal 15"

any idea why it wouldn't boot ?

Thanks

Not to be a jerk, but installing OSX was a no-brainer. The only thing I didnt do was remove all the stupid language support. When I loaded my Ibook the 2nd time, i removed the language support. I have the 500MHz model, so a full install took almost TWO hours. :( W/out the extra language crap, it took no longer than 30 minutes.

Now, as i recall, Apple did remove support for the older OS's but that shouldn't stop you from installing 10.1.5. did u try calling apple tech support? :(
