How to know which sound card driver my Mac 10.4 uses and how to update it

Hi,
I am bewildered when I installed the new SKYPE (2006 january Version) on my system and still could not succed in makeing telephone communication online
Message? failed: playback error

I tried serach the skype online FAQ and was told somewhere to update my soundcard driver.

How do I get about this?

I need help here!

Well, Macs don't really have a soundcard like those you find in PCs. Everything is basically outputted as a digital audio file (even MIDI files are played using QuickTime Instruments which are samples of General MIDI sounds, they're just of a higher quality than those you find in PC sooundcards). Skype should have worked right out of the bat without the need to look for sound drivers.

You mentioned that you were running 10.4. Have you upgraded to the latest Tiger version which is 10.4.4? Also try and repair permissions. The other thing you can also do is delete the .plist preference file for Skype. Check in /Library/Preferences or <your home folder>/Library/Preferences.
 
Also, check yoru firewall settings/router settings.. Skype is internet based and requires packets to travel correctly.
