How to reset the original iPod

I have the original iPod about a year and one month old. The battery only lasts about 3hours on one charge. I have read on the net if I retore it to the original firmware the battery will last longer. I will not get the added new features but that is OK.

I want to reset the firmware and erase all the music off it so that I can start fresh and sync it to my laptop.

Have you installled the latest iPod update? It's targeted specifically to improve battery performance, and it does work. I'd sugest doing that before re-formatting or something else so drastic.
But if you hit reset all data on the iPod menu under settings, it should blank it out (I've never tried that particular command since I don't keep everything on the iPod on my hard drive to save space). Then just remember to start back at step one when syncing it up with iTunes for the first time again.

The problem is that I have been trying to sync to my old G3 Wallstreet powerbook that has a pcmia add on firewire card. I could sync iTunes but could never get any of the iPod updates to work with it. Also since the fire wire is not powerd lately hooking it to firewire drains the battery immediately. I called Applecare about it about month before it went out of warranty but they wanted me to pay $50 shipping to have them look at it. So at present I am trying to salvage something from my $400+ investment.

Thanks I'll will try that. Because the wallstreet had a third party pcmia firewire card using the iPod with it was not very easy (at least for me). I guess I should try it with the new one before I start doing drastic things to it. It has never been updated since the day I bought it. I guess I will have to smoke out the previous updates first. Thanks again.
