How to stop Apache loading by default

Hi there.

I m running Apache through xampp so I don't need the default Apache also running.

When I go into xampp and turn Apace off, I go look in System Settings and notice that all sharing options are turned off and yet when I type localhost/ into my browser I get the words:
"It works!" show up in my browser.

How is it possible for localhost to show something when both xampp and sharing is turned off?

I am thinking that perhaps there is a config file or something that turns Apache on during boot but that it doesn't show up in the Settings. Unfortunately anything to do with low level OSX inner workings I have no experience with.

Googling and reading up a bit I found this command:
apachectl stop

...but I can't change to root user to use it as I have no idea what the root password is. I never setup any root password so how would I know????

I normally don't have a password for my own account as I am the only one who uses this Mac but for the purposes of using sudo I made it "piet". When entering sudo apachectl stop and entering my password, I get this message:
launchctl: Error unloading: org.apache.httpd

That is the sum total of my knowledge in this regard.

As it is, my localhost is now completely messed up. If I go into localhost/phpmyadmin I can do what I want to do, no problem... then suddenly, everything would just hang... I can click on any link I want or I can even retype localhost or localhost/phpmyadmin, it does't matter. All that happens is it loads forever. Even closing the browser and restarting it, same problem.

Starting and stopping xampp's apache a few times and closing the browser a few times, then it starts working again, for a few minutes (some times less than a minute) then it dies again...

I am at my wits end here...

Someone, please help...
Thanks.

p.s. latest xampp, Lion 10.7.2, all updates installed apart from latest Flash.
