When is Spotlight Indexing? i know that new items automatically added, but how does one re-index?
If you leave you mac on, it uses the cpu time to continue indexing... but how can you tell?

When Spotlight does its initial index, it should display its progress in the Spotlight menu.

You can also see how much CPU time the indexing is taking by opening Activity Monitor and searching for the "mdimport" process. It should always be loaded, but when it's not actively indexing, it'll use 0.0% of your processing time.

You can delete the index of a disk (which will force Spotlight to re-index it) in Terminal using the mdutil command. In Terminal, type "man mdutil" for info on how to use it. You can also follow the instructions posted in our How-To section, which don't require Terminal.

In theory, you should never need to force re-indexing, though. But still, if for some reason you need to, you can.
