how use a monitor to enlarge desktop?

I connect a lcd 18" monitor to my G5 tiger mac but I can only see the same thinks that are on the desktop. How I can use it as an enlarge part of the desktop?

Open the Displays PreferencePane in the System preferences. Drag the two displays side by side.
 
there should be a setting in the displays pane to switch from "mirrored" to what you want - all macs are very good at dual monitor support

Thats not true, most "low cost" macs have desktop spanning disabled (unless you use a firmware hack). This includes ibooks and emacs.

edit: Although I see no problems on a G5. Simply disable the mirroring in the system preferences.
