How's QuickTime 6?

Any one know when will QuickTime 6 be released?

I haven't heard any news from Apple or others for a while.

I've heard that MPEG has finished their deliberations (as of Monday, I believe) and has come up with something that would require Apple and other licensors to pay, but not the consumer (so far, so good, as that is a more normal price structure) so hopefully it won't be delayed for too much longer.

There was something about the IMCA (or whatever that assosciation was called that Apple helped to co-found) accepted the terms of licensing for the .AC3 audio component of the MPEG4 spec. There were no royalty fees for the consumers. The video part of the MPEG4 spec remains with the royalty fee, and so Apple still won't release QuickTime 6.

I might point out that it's Apple's CHOICE not to put out QuickTime 6... Apple could put it out if they wanted, but they chose to try and force the MPEG Licensing Alliance to change their terms of licensing for the better.

Oops... I was misinformed about that, then. Thanks for correcting, simX :)

I do hope this gets moving soon, but at least it's good that Apple's trying to get on the consumers' side(s) more with this move. The fact that it's really their choice makes you realize that Apple really does care enough to want to make this better for us, the users, and they're going through quite a bit of hassle for it.

Thanks, Apple! :)

Yeah, that's right, but releasing QT 6 with todays MPEG 4 licencing terms would still not be possible. At least Apple would have to implent a function in QT 6 that keeps track of every hour of MPEG 4 encoded video played, and send it to an Apple server, but not everyone even have an internet connection, either, so that would still be problematic. An other option would be to give the users responsibility for keeping track of usage and payment, but I guess most users wouldn't pay, anyway, so that wouldn't really be a solution.
