HP 1510xi - Setup Asst reports missing software???

Trying to install a new model HP1510xi PSC (printer/scanner/copier) with an older Performa 6400.

My father (and I) are Hurricane Katrina victims with flooded houses. The old Performa was on the 2nd floor. I'm trying to get it functioning with a printer so my father will have something to use for now.

Installed a USB PCI card and necessary support software. Appears to work fine. Thumbdrives read OK. HP All In One Installer software recognized that 1510xi was attached, and proceeded with software install. Apple Profiler then showed USB ports with 1510xi connected.

Rebooted to finish install. HP Setup Assistant launches to complete installation. That's where the two problems start.

(1) It reports that "some needed software is missing" and asks if internet should be searched. Search turns up nothing. Software doesn't tell you exactly what is missing. Only driver available on the internet is bundled into the HP Setup Assistant (not available separately). Has anyone seen this before?

(2) Setup Assistant then brings up a "chooser window". Shows an HP PSC device on the left. But, there is nothing to choose in the right column. Refreshing USB list still does not bring up anything to choose. HP PSC shows as the printer choice in apps (e.g., Word). But, printing goes to the spooler and no further (never prints).

Apple Chooser - same issue. HP 1510xi shows on the left, but double-clicking it doesn't result in a selection on the right to choose (even after a refresh).

HP Tech(s) had me uninstall, apply Disk First Aid, reinstall, to no avail (tried 3 times). They had no further advice, other than downloading the installer from the web (tried 3 times, but Stuffit would never expand the download, even though it worked fine on the USB sofware downloads done the previous evening).

The printer spec calls for a minimum of 128mb of real memory, and I only have 80. I do have 300+ mb of virtual memory. I assume this would not cause the above problem.

what is the os requirement, and what os are you running? the pre os 9 oses had little to none usb support, and 9.1-9.2.2 had poor usb support. becasue the printer is new, it may not work at all on your old mac.
