hp laserjet 4l & os x

hi, i'm new here and hope someone can help me.

i have a mac laptop, os 10.2.8 and i also own an old hp laserjet 4l, which has been a workhorse over the years (at least 10 years old).

i have previously used powerprint to use the printer with my old macs (up to version 9.2), but powerprint doesn't have any drivers past os x, as far as i can tell.

so i've downloaded the driver from the hp site, installed it, restarted, etc. but the printer utility still insists that the driver isn't installed.

is there something i'm missing?

I have a laser jet 4 plus that gimp-print does have a driver for. The problem is that when I print to it through the print server (hp jetdirect) it simply prints the first page over and over. It does this even using a printer shared on a Windows XP machine. It has done this from 10.2 - 10.3 on two different machines. A G4 cube and a powerbook 12 867.
