HP4M-10.4.5 Printer Problem

I am having trouble hooking up my HP4M via Ethernet to my Mac running 10.4.5. The printer has a Jet Direct card in it and worked fine with an older Mac running 10.3.9.

Advice seems to vary on how to set this up:
1. Use the IP address provided by the printer and enter it in manually in IPv4
2. Use an IP address of 192.168.1.21 (or 192.168.1.10 or 192.168.3.5) in IPv4.
3. In either case, it was recommended to turn of IPv6, which I did.

Regardless of the IP address, when I go to add a printer in Printer Utility, I have tried using generic printer, HP4M-gimp print and HP4M Postscript. I have also tried using each of the three options: IPP, LPD and Jet. Still can't get it to print; in some cases it gives a message saying the network is busy; in others, nothing happens, not even a blinking light on the printer.

I've also replaced the Ethernet cable between the printer and the desktop.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I helped a friend with similar problems. We only were able to get an HP4M + to work (the + includes postscript) using the Jet mode (which is appletalk). Never got IPP or LPD modes to work. He had a regular HP4M (not plus) as well and that never worked. The other thing was his JetDirect card had come loose and had to be re-seated (we saw this initially but it would have been a problem troubleshooting if we had not). We printed the test page to verify and looked at all the settings.
