I always have to safeboot my G4, then restart!

Since a couple of days my mac (G4 Dual 800 10.4.8) has not started properly. I always have to safeboot then restart to get things running. I can't remember to have installed something so I do not know why this happens.
Could it be that one of my harddrives (Maxtor 6L300R0) is the problem? I installed it about one and a half month ago and its capacity of 300 GH exceeds the 128 MB that disk utility is recognizing (so it always showed me something like "too many allocation blocks" or s.th similar). The last two days this drive also has given me a verifying error in disk utility and I cannot repair it.
There is nothing wrong with my System/Start Up Disk (which is another drive) according to disk utility.
I Think I will just reformat the new HD and see if s.th. changes (By the way should I then partition it in blocks <128GB?)
Thank you for your help.
