I cannot get my Mackbook to turn on

Last night I was doing work for Law School on my Macbook and began having trouble with Word. I had received numerous requests for updates but always click remind me later and I believe the uypdates automatically started and Word froze. Everytime I would restart Word it would lock up. Today I got my Macbook to turn on and was working on it and had the same problems. However now I cannot get it to turn back on and it is very hot. I have numerous important files on my Macbook and have not backed them up, will I be able to recover these files or are they lost forever?

Lesson learned to back up. But anyway boot to your install disk and go to utilities/disk utility and repair the disk if possible. Let us know what comes up.
