I did not expect today to be the day that I...

I've always presumed that it would be a VERY long time until I had weaned myself from Classic, but to my surprised today became the day.

So I have not done away with Classic entirely, but today it ceased to be something that automatically launched when I logged in.

Even more surprising is why I decided to do it... Office X. Now I'm not a huge Office user, but I DO use Entourage as my default email program. So once my email became Carbonized with Office X I had to ask myself why I was even bothering to load Classic.

...For the moment the answer to why I ever load Classic is 3 things:

1) Adobe Photoshop: I'm a Web guy and I make GIF's and JPEG's fairly regularly. Also Photoshop has become my main viewer (admittedly overkill for this task) for a bunch of different file formats.

2) I have a bunch of email archived back to 1996 in Entourage 2000 and I have not been able to figure out how to get it all out.... (There is a particularly convoluted issues I don't feel like explaining here...)

3) I've been playing a lot with my Cannon PowerShot G1's QuickTime VR pannorama feature, and the software that stiches these together is still a Classic App.

So there are ONLY a few things left and I don't use any of them often enough to merit booting Classic every time I login... So I've turned auto start off!!

I know this does not merit great congratulations, but I truely am surprised and happy. :)

i did this last week. no release of anything that sparked it. i just suddenly realized that i would have whole sessions in front of the moniter without using it. now the hardest part to get used to is when i do need classic and it starts launching. it doesn't bother me that it adds the extra time at that moment. it's just adjusting to the idea that it wasn't running. it still surprises me everytime.

:D

this sounds a bit like an addiction clinic:

"Hi, my name is roger, and I use OS X. However 4 days ago I had a relapse and loaded Classic. I couldn't help it, I was weak, but I really needed to use my scanner. Since then I have had to shoot it up every day, sometimes twice a day. I know dealer who can get me carbon and cocoa, but it's not enough.

Thanks for listening guys. I know that I am not alone."

Tommy and Ed - you have broken free.

lol, roger ... :D

incidentally, i've never had classic autoload ... unfortunately for me, the only classic app i still use is logic audio gold (music production software), which won't run under classic at all, only under "proper" os9 ... so i either boot into x or into 9 ... :)
apparently the native x version of logic is going to be out sometime in february, so when that happens, i won't ever need classic again ... yay! :D

"I'm free, I'm free!
and waiting for you to follow me..."
- the Who

i have this picture in my head right now of roger daltrey in "Tommy" flying overhead on a hang glider as they played that song.

maybe that was where m$ got the idea for flying people in the xp commercials. then they realized they would want to charge for it and ditched the hanglider to reduce the association. but then again i heard nobody there can spell free, so maybe not.:p

now let's see, what app can i run? i haven't been in classic all day and my fingers are starting to shake....:D

TommyWillB: I like Entourage as well. I too would use the X version to get mail instead of with Mail (sorry Apple, not enough features to keep me hooked) Only problem is this: up until now I have been using Mail as my default email app and I can not find any scripts in Entourage that import Mail's mail and mailboxes. Any help for me?

Thanks and have a great day!

Albert

LOL :p

Well whenever I go into OS X classic never loads up (dont need it) :p -- of course I only use OS X on the weekends he he he

I may be WAY off base here, but don't Mail and Eudora both use MBOX?

If that is true, then possibly you can get the Eudora import to work?

Hello!

Thanks for trying to help. I tried what you said and Entourage gave me this error: "Import from Eudora could not be completed because a necessary file Eudora was not found"

Well, hey, what can you expect from the people who make PCs :)

Have a great day!

Hey, show a little respect to the Mac guys over at Microsoft! They could just copy the PC Office, instead they always make the Mac Office better than the PC Office ;)

Then again, I also can't understand why such a feature (many people used mail because Entourage wasn't ported to X until v.X was released) wasn't added...

I wasn't meaning that as a bad remark to MS, just an observation. Yes, they did add remarkable features for a Mac app ( better then any app I have seen ) Guess I'd better go over to their support site and see if I can get something.

Have a great day!

Albert
