I installed my first PC

It took me several days to find all the necessary information.

I bought a Dell Latitude XPi CD (133 MHz Pentium with MMX) for 8$.
I have a Windows 98 SE license from a former Compaq PC, but didn't have a boot disk. I needed several days to find the right place to get the bootdisk file, I needed a PC to make the floppy. Then I needed on night to understand how I needed to format (with two different line commands) the HD. Finally I was able to install the OS. Now it works.... Difficult to compare with MacOS X (or even MacOS 9), but that's one more computer available in house.

Right now is my first access to Internet with my "brand new" PC. I hope I will not get virus directly !!

Hey, if you surf the internet long enough, you might even get some spyware and adware, too!

My girlfriend's computer was rife with that crap. I backed up her stuff, wiped it, copied her documents back, and had her start over... she is now happily using FireFox... and no crapware yet.

Then again, you could install one of the many flavors of Linux or UNIX, and you wouldn't have to worry about virii/spyware/adware either.

It would be the closest thing to Mac OS X you could have on that machine. Not as nice, but definitely better than Windows.
