ok here it is I am the asst. chief of a small volunteer fire dept. in northern ca.

the only computer we have is an old power mac 8500 I would like to put linux on it. My problem is i don't know which one and everytime I go to download I just don't understand what all I have to download.

I more or less know how to use linux but don't know how to install it.

thanks.

ps I also would like to have a version of linux I can run form a cd on my iBook g3 700mhz 640mb Ram

If you plan on using it as a server, you can always install Debian on it. I have Debian "sarge" installed on a StarMax 4000 running at 160 MHz. The 8500 is basically comparable to my machine so it should run ok. However, if you want something a little easier to use, there's Yellow Dog Linux 4.0 and Mandrake 10.1.

To download a CD, you need to look at the site for the distribution you want. They should have a download section and mirrors to the CD ISO images which you would use to burn a CD from.

Here are the links to the following distributions:

http://www.yellowdoglinux.com
http://www.debian.org (I recommend downloading an ISO of the debian-installer, which is easier to use than the normal installer on Debian 3.0)
http://www.mandrakelinux.com
