IBM PowerPC 970

I'm suprised no one hasnt replied to this amazing discovery yet. Very cool :)

EDIT: Wait you own that site dont you? Where did this info come from?

I saw it in Forbes a few days ago. Something else worth mentioning, the article also said that the chip won't go into heavy production until late next year.

Well, it's the official IBM press info. Everything else is - afaik - speculation. And the official info just says: next year.

Unless they are already producting these chips there is no way that they can setup, make a run, test, make changes, and produce in a high volume in a timeframe of a couple of months. Remember when the G4 was released? That was almost a joke.

If the chip will be sold to Apple next year, that most likely means they will be taping this chip out by the end of this year. It usually takes a chip to go into high-volume manufacturing about a year, especially if it's on a new CMOS fabrication process.

But that doesn't necessarily mean that Apple systems won't be available until after the end of 2003. IBM might sell Alpha or Beta samples to Apple if the first samples of the 970 are very good. This might mean Apple systems (most likely the high-end systems like the powermac and xserve) in the summer or early fall. Just a guess.

Well, let's not put our hopes too high. This chip isn't gonna be in our desktop systems for quite a while. PowerPC 7500 from Motorola in January anyone? (And will there be a PowerBook version of the 7500 anytime soon?)

There was a huge discussion on /. going on about when the chip would come out and what Moto's plans were. I would drop dead with disbelief if Moto did end up surprising us like that!
