i just got 2000 to buy a computer. it will be hard for me to
get much more money than 600 extra to cover tax, etc.

right now im having a dilemma. i would like to get a portable
mac to complement the g4 867 i have at home. i will
especially need it for a big presentation i have to make in a
few months in cali.

in the meantime, i would like to get some opinions from people
out there. right now i can afford to get an ibook 700 with no
problem. i just would like to make sure that i can do not only
internet browsing and word processing.. i would like to play
some games like diablo ii, warcraft iii, and quake iii. i would also soon
like to get an airport base station.

although i know its like comparing apples and oranges in terms of computing
power, i would like to a sense from people with either ibooks or ti books.

ironically, if i had all the money in the world i would get the ti book, but
i prefer the aesthetics of the ibook. its more rugged i understand.

thanks in advance.

Get the Ti book. Especially if you want your presentation to run smoothly.

You honestly have to ask yourself if you NEED the extra power a TiBook gives you. OS X really runs quite well on iBooks and the Radeon chip in the new models makes it pretty good, but not absolutely great, for games. Word processing, email, presentations would run absolutely fine on an iBook, and I imagine you would spend most of your time doing this. The games you mentioned would be acceptable on your iBook, but the FPS would not be up in the 100's like they would on the PowerBook.
What helps me decide these things is creating a simple checklist with two columns of items between the two laptops like Processor Speed, HD space, Price, and most importantly, Level of Importance. (i.e. Is having a huge HD important if you only want to do email/a few games? not really. I use a 1-5 rating.) Once you get past the glitzy advertising on the webpages, you would probably be surprised at the small amount of differences.

I guess what I am trying to say is, think hard about your expected use of a laptop and if you intend to keep for it a long time, need high processor speed, etc. While many people have this prejudice against the iBook because of it's G3 and "lower-class" status, it really is a nice, tough little machine.

thanks for your replies... i actually bought the 14.1" 700MHz
iBook. although i do dig the tiBook, i couldnt afford it, and you
are right. the iBook is reasonably fast enough to run word, etc.
i havent played games on it yet, but i just wanted to make sure
i got something that would be fast enough for jaguar.

once again, thanks for your responses.

it is actually working out better than i hoped. i havent
done much by the way of gaming, but it does all my
work stuff pretty well.

cant wait for jaguar :)
