iBook G3?

After serious consideration about how i will be needing another laptop computer in 3 years for college, i see no point in buying an iMac...

A cheap little iBook would probably work for now...

But, how fast is a 800MHZ G3?

It just sounds so slow...

Fast enough for most tasks... what do you intend to use it for?

I use a 500 mhz G3 iBook, with the slower 66mhz bus and the smaller 8mb video card. It is fast enough to comfortably run Mac OS X, Office, Safari, Mail and a couple of utilities all at once without any real delays. It's good for games, except when it comes to Quake3 level 3d games. It runs PhotoShop and Illustrator okay, though I reboot into Mac OS 9 when I have a lot of design work to do, as it makes Photoshop much smoother.
I also do a Java programming unit, and use DreamWeaver MX.
All of the major apps take about 5 seconds to load ... but this is forgivable and they perform well once they've loaded up.

Is there anything special you will be doing with it that might be pushing the iBook much farther than that?

On the other hand, I just realised you said you need a computer "in three years" ... why don't you put off getting one for a couple of years if you haven't got much cash to spare right now?

The programs that you mentioned are probably the ones i would be using alot.

I would purchase the 1299 iBook...so it would have an 800 MHZ and a 16MB video card...though i don't really know the difference in the video card...

One thing that pisses me off..is you can't get a superdrive.

I really really really want a DVD-RW...

The 12" screen is depressing, but i am willing to give up screen size to be able to bring my computer anywhere in the house and be on the internet...i need to get used to having a laptop as i mentioned i will most likely end up with one in college...

Oh, i just read the last sentance of your post..meep..

Yeah, my parents would be buying this computer...and then i'm on my own for the future...

It's going to be alot easier to get them to spend 1299 instead of like...1899

Oh, BTW, i'm still a windows user...and my PC is dying.

I have a 700 MHz ibook now as my main machine (and no peecee since i had to sell it last year). it is faster than what my peecee was. i'm happy with it..
consider most of the 14" peecee laptops have the same resolution it has = 1024x768. so maybe 5 % or less of those with 14" have a bigger screen resolution.

go for an ibook - if you can get or want or afford later e.g. a powerbook, you can always sell your ibook. macs save their used value a lot better than peecees, and ... well, get the DVD - (CD) RW. max of RAM and airport will make it a joy .. or at least get 384 MB (or more) or RAM - it will make it a lot faster. The ability of burning CDs is quite necessary as well, considering your peecee is dying and that you could survive with one computer only... ;)

I would probably end up selling (or maybe just keeping) the ibook and buying a Powerbook...later on.

*wonders if there are firewire/usb external DVD-RW drives for mac...*

Too many and in fact you can use most of the so-called Windows only devices :D

;)

:D

Just FYI...
The 800mHz model comes with 32MB of dedicated video, not 16MB....

I have the 800mHz iBook. I bought it in November, and am looking at selling it to get a 12" powerbook. Go ahead and get the iBook, you wont regret it. Im only upgrading because im one of those people that always has to have the better machine, and I like to upgrade my stuff every 6 months or so. I love my iBook though, definently no regrets.
