iBook G4 and USB hard drive

Recently I purchased a hard drive enclosure for a 2.5" 30 GB hard drive I have lying around unused. It came with a USB cable that has two connections at one end, which I've been told is needed to fully power the drive.

When I hook everything up and plug the drive into my iBook, it loads up, then within a few seconds it disappears and I get the OS X "you did a bad thing by not unmounting your drive first" error message. If I leave everything connected, the drive will appear and disappear, giving the same error message every time the drive disappears.

This all happens if I have just one or both of the USB connections attached.

Do the iBook G4 USB ports provide enough power for my drive? I can't tell if it's the enclosure, the cable, or the iBook that's the problem. I tried using two different hard drives, both of which worked fine in their original electronics, but they both display the same problem.
