iBook G4 stuck asleep

OK, so my iBook (1.42Ghz, 10.4.11, 1.5Gb RAM) has a blank screen.

It was working fine...then I put it to sleep by shutting the lid, and when I opened it, the computer woke up but not the screen (black).

When you turn it on then the backlight comes on, the computer boots and I'm know it goes all the way through to the OS, because if you leave the mouse untouched then the display dims slightly after 3 mins, as it should.
I left it lying around for a couple of weeks and the battery went dead...and then it started working again. So I ran Tech Tool (no problems found) and then restarted it. Worked fine, then I shut the lid to put it to sleep...then the same thing happened again.

I've zapped PRAM and the PMU, tried leaving the battery out for a couple of days etc etc
There's no image when it's booted off either the tech tool CD or the OS X CD either.
I can't find the silly little display adaptor so can't try it with an external monitor.
It's had logic board problems before (wobbly Aiport/BT card, seems to be common in this vintage), but these are totally different symptoms.

It recovered again the other week, after it had sat around for a few weeks (interestingly battery not flat this time) and it ran fine. I used the OS X cd to check the hard drive and repaired a few permissions. Nothing else. After a little while, it happened again and now I'm back to where I was originally.

Thoughts/suggestions?!? Anything welcome. Thanks!
